The 72 Melakarta Ragas — A Scientific System
One of the most brilliant aspects of Carnatic music theory is the Melakarta system — a comprehensive classification of 72 parent ragas (Melakarta Ragas) from which all other ragas are derived as sub-sets (Janya Ragas). Conceived by the musicologist Venkatamakhi in the 17th century, this system is both mathematically precise and musically profound. Each Melakarta raga uses all seven notes (Sa Ri Ga Ma Pa Da Ni) in both the ascending and descending scale, and they are systematically arranged by their note combinations. The 72 Melakarta Ragas are divided into 12 groups of 6, called Chakras — each chakra named after a heavenly being. By memorising a clever mnemonic called Katapayadi, a trained musician can instantly determine the exact notes of any Melakarta Raga from its number alone. This elegant system demonstrates that Carnatic music is not merely an art — it is a deep science of sound, mathematics, and devotion.
